Returning the car (well, simply locking the keys in the car outside the rental agency) we left Gail and Nic as they jumped on the Eurostar back to London and we caught a connecting train through Paris to Luxembourg. A couple of hours later we were in the heart of Luxembourg. Looking to grab a bite of dinner, I came to the quick realisation that this is one of the more expensive cities in Europe I had seen, with a basic cafe meal coming in just over 25 euros for the main alone. As we started walking around the city. It was at this point we realised that there wasn't much to see and even less to do. So headed back to the hotel for an early night in preparation for a full days strolling the next day.

We got some tickets for a hop-on hop-off sightseeing tour of Luxembourg. That way we could get around the highlights, get the history and hide from the new found bad weather in the morning. Turns out the Luxembourg has been a natural fort for hundreds of years - with the old original city on a raised central hill surrounded by a very deep valley. As each civilization has taken it over, they have simply built over the previous battlements. We found the ruins and caves the most interesting, spending the majority of the day investigating these. Luxembourg is a real melting pot of nationalities with over 40% immigrants due to the EU offices there. Luxembourg is a really small city, so it’s hard to get lost, but you should try as the streets have a lot of charm.

We spend the next morning window shopping and strolling around the central parks before flying back to London.
